Building a Culture of Creatives

Building a culture of innovation is not about getting the right people in the right seats. It’s about curating a group of people who are curious, inventive and collaborative. At Homebase, we want to know what gets you excited. What are your hobbies and side hustles?  When the workplace clears the way for creativity in all departments, growth and success happen naturally. This is the work environment of the future.

This is Homebase.

We are a team of 60 individuals with multiple strengths, interests, and facets to our identity that are expressed in the work we create. When we have the opportunity to explore and share our complexities, we are happier, uniquely inventive, and inspire others to get more creative in the process. It’s thrilling for our teams and key to our company’s success.

As we’re building this innovation machine, we intentionally look for opportunities to engage the creative capacities of every employee regardless of their role.

Of course, this requires more than just flexibility and an open mindset. It requires leadership to be intentional with employee engagement and get comfortable with creative chaos. Understanding the strengths and multifaceted talents of our internal team allows us to create and deliver multifaceted solutions for our customers.

So how do we get there?

Curiosity. Humility. Consistency.

We start with the interview. Sure we want to know if a candidate is capable of fulfilling a certain role, but we also ask questions to bring out the skills and experiences not listed on a resume. Many times we’ve found that those undocumented talents were left off because the candidate didn’t think they were relevant to the position, which could be the case in other companies. But knowing that one of our project managers has a master’s degree in audio engineering, that our UX Designer is a theater lighting expert, or that one of our customer support specialists has a master’s in fine arts enables us to maximize our people resources. And we would never know if we didn’t ask.

Creating a space that fosters creativity means creating a space to allow room for mistakes and vulnerabilities. And it starts with leadership. If the leaders of the company are willing to try new things, admit inexperience and ask for help, employees are empowered to step up.

A behind the scenes look: UX Designer, Matt Mahr, and Director of Product Management, Justin Christian, utilize their previous work experience. personal hobbies, and expertise to tag-team video production needs for Homebase.

Empowered people build powerful solutions. We bring our craziest ideas to the table and reinvent the wheel to create solutions for our customers. None of this would be possible without regular communications. Weekly individual performance chats solidify the importance of every employee’s contribution and develop the trust needed for authentic discovery. That’s where the best ideas happen.

This energy is harvested into every interaction, project, and vision. By embracing individuality within our team, we’re building the future of living like never before. Ready to build with us?
