Meet the Team: Machaela

Machaela is a multifamily industry expert, former property manager, mother of two, and a superstar on our sales team. Her insights about the experiences of property staff and her generosity of spirit elevate our team, so we sat down with her to learn more about what shapes her.

What app do you use the most or cannot live without?

My Reminders app.  It’s very basic, it comes on the iPhone, but I am a list freak.  I have a list for everything. I mean, Target, Costco, Sam’s, groceries, meal plan prep, house shopping, and then actual reminders of things I need to do.

If I need to get it done, it’s going to be on there.

How has your career path led you to Homebase?

I worked my way up from leasing agent, to assistant manager, to property manager, and I always knew that I would eventually not be onsite. I feel like I have more to give on a broader scale. Onsite, you’re so focused on one team, one property, and one set of residents. I’ve always known that I wanted to make a bigger impact than that, and there came a point where it was time to make a change.  I came across Homebase as a new career path and the timing just worked out.

How does your experience as a property manager impact what you do at Homebase?

Gosh. It impacts nearly everything. Because of my experience, I’m able to look at everything from a bigger picture and imagine how our solutions will not just increase the property’s value, but improve the everyday lives of the residents of those communities along with the teams that work on them every day.

We know you love vision boards, so what’s on your vision board for 2022?

Oh, yes. One of my goals is to start a blog. Another is for my husband and I to buy our first income rental property.

How have your habits or routine changed since the pandemic?

I mean, I bought a lot more plants, but I don’t know if that’s a plus. (Laughs.)

I actually feel like they have changed in a positive way. I used to let my day run me, and due to things shutting down I was able to take more control over my time. I’m very into time blocking and setting my day so I work on certain things at certain times. Even if I have to move things around, I feel a lot more in control.

I’m also valuing work-life balance more and actually putting it into motion. I don’t need to be on call 24/7. Not everything is an emergency. I don’t have to answer that email right away. It will be there Monday morning. It’s helping me be more present with my family, which I know they’ve noticed.
